Background
When making art...
As a college freshman with no dance experience, I quickly learned to dance through online tutorials, weekly practices, and support from teammates.
But creating choreography was overwhelming—where to start? How to create? No tools existed to guide beginners in making dance.
There are no instructions.

There are many different approaches

With my friends Christina, Guo, and Shek, we interviewed 8 dancers from diverse backgrounds to explore challenges in choreography. Our UX research revealed 5 key insights about the common struggles dancers face when creating routines.

Problem Statement
But why is it hard to start?
Less experienced dancers are looking to improve their skills by creating their own choreography. However, the process of creating choreography is often overwhelming, including creating diverse move, finding the best matching song, and coordinating other dancers.

Process
Brainstorming
The first strokes
After team discussions, we decided a combination of an app and a physical camera best addressed our research. The app offers easy access for music on phones, while the camera, mounted on a mirror, enables practical movement tracking over a smart mirror.

The essential tools for the choreography process
Our team designed four app features to address user needs and guide dancers through the choreography process, based on our research insights.

Feature 01- Homepage
The Homepage focuses on enabling users to create choreography easily. Our user research revealed that choreography is akin to artistic expression, reliant on the dancer's experience.
Feature 02 - Inspiration
The Inspiration page enables users to discover and learn new dance moves through different mediums. Our user research found that novice choreographers often felt restricted by their limited dance knowledge which led to frequent creative blocks.
Feature 03 - Feedback
Our user research indicated user's need for external input during the choreography process. Therefore, we wanted to introduce AI & professional feedback to distinguish our product, offering users a unique assistance not commonly found in similar platforms.
Feature 04 - Document
The Documentation page allows users to record their creativity within the app through video playback & session tracking. In our user research, we found dancers typically utilize videos and notes to help track their progress.
Tangibly seeing designs come to life
Creating paper prototypes helped us visualize our wireframes and interactions. They're built on initial sketches and provided a tangible way to explore the design.
Here’s an example of my paper prototype for ChoreoScope’s choreography guide.

High Fidelity Prototyping
Sharpening and polishing
From our low fidelity prototypes, my team created high fidelity prototypes in Figma. The designs are inspired by our initial sketches and common structures found in other media player forums. Below are screen shots of our high fidelity prototypes.

Solution
Forward
Future Improvements
Below are some improvements I would have wanted to explore if I had more time with my team to implement into ChoreoScope.
01 - AI Suggestions | I would explore the improvements of AI Suggestions in the Feedback page. I would want to create a page that allows you to ask AI dance prompts and suggestions while choreographing.
02 - Collaboration | In the Home page, I would explore the ways in which this choreography guide can be a collaborated space between two dancers. If both dancers have the app, I would want to see if this feature can be synced across platforms.
03 - Video Platform | In the inspiration page, I would explore the existing data base of uploaded and finished videos that users have. I would then create a video platform on the inspiration page that allows other users to see choreography made within the app.
Special Thanks
I would like to thank my friends: Christina, Guo, & Shek for working with me on this project. We collaborated and discussed a lot about the final designs and I couldn't have done this project without them. Being that this is a product entirely made from a problem I wanted to address is truly incredible and I'm so excited to see where this feature and technology can go in the future.
